I know this is a bit off-topic for our usual hunting discussions, but I was just curious whether anyone carries a defensive blade around town? [I'm familiar with the old "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight" adage.] I will soon be getting a concealed weapon permit but when I lived in Los Smogeles, that wasn't a viable option. I used to carry a large Cold Steel folder.
Even if you don't carry a defensive knife, what are your thoughts on the best models/styles/etc.?

The silence suggests that everyone is packing more serious heat than just a blade. Next week I'm taking the class for my Nevada and Utah concealed weapon permits. The Nevada instructor seemed to think that a NV CCW might permit me to carry an ASP collapsible steel baton. After 7 years at a Filipino stick academy, I'd really like to have the option of using an ASP before a firearm---in certain situations. Anyone have a Nevada CCW and know whether it covers impact or edged weapons as well as firearms?
Thanks,

I usually carry a Spyderco Endura with full-serrated edge for emergencies or defense

Most any knife with a 3" or greater blade could be used well in a defensive emergency, but you must be aware it may quickly escalate any situation quickly.
If your in the process of being robbed by someone with a knife in hand, and you in turn show a knife you can be assured that if they also have a gun it will quickly come into play
and likly be used against you.
If your going to cary a knife for self defense I would suggest something large enough that it may be used as much for a deterrent rather than the best possible fighting knife.
PS: I agree the ASP collapsible baton would probably be a better choice than a knife.
With a knife your extending your reach by 3 to 6 inches, however a ASP baton can be 10" collapsed yet extend to over 22" when needed.
This is a whole lot of love waiting to reach out and touch someone.

kinda funny.
I carry my buck 317 everyplace I go but when I go to the groc store at night I make sure my tape measure is on my belt. My tape measure has some weight to it and I kinda regard it as more of a defensive weapon than my knife. Also, I figure if I have to clock someone with the tape measure, I'll have a LOT less trouble with the law than if I cut them with a knife.

PS: Ncboman makes a good point in that even the most innocent of items can be used towards good defense if need be

JAH:wink: I've thought about getting one of those mega sized D cell Mag Lites for the same reason as being somewhat useful and something that could be somewhat defensive at the same time. It seems to me that a knife that would be large enough to be defensive might pose a problem with concealment. Around these parts, I'd use a knife most often for checking the steaks on the barbecue. That might not be the case where some of you guys live.

I just picked up 3 of Buck Folding Filet knives (one for a neighbor).
It kinda got me PO'ed when they said they couldn't be shipped to New York because
the Getto monkeys may kill each other with 'em (Where's the loss in that ??).
In Bennington their only used to cut fish, and they work very well...

Thats a nice looking fillet knife. I have a Buck fixed blade and consider it the best I have had.

When in the big city, I often carry a rattan Filipino fighting cane. Looks very normal but it's light, fast, and really hurts. Good reach.
I must not have big enough hands because I never liked the 6 D Cell Maglite I own. Too thick and a bit too slow because of its weight. Many years ago Cold Steel marketed a flashlight with a 1/4" thick aluminum body that used 7 AA cells. It was relatively long and of moderate weight, but very thin. I should have ordered half a dozen but I never got even one. It felt like a non-collapsible ASP. Really nice.
I took my Nevada and Utah CCW classes last week and have the paperwork in process. Near as I can tell, the Nevada CCW covers only the specifically listed firearms with which you "demonstrate competence". Don't think it will let me carry an ASP collapsible baton or fixed blade concealed.
I have long carried an ASP Street Defender, which is a kubaton or palm stick with a replaceable pepper spray insert. Only had to use the spray once but it was amazingly hot stuff. Several of my friends have used them with good results. The big advantage over a blade is that you can use it in situations where lethal force might not be justified. And as pointed out above, a knife does not have as much reach as weapons like spray, cane, baton.

Kinda makes me wonder who you are hanging out with or what neighborhoods you frequent!!!:afraid:

Less than a year ago a friend and I were having tacos at a little restaurant near Washington and Rimpau in LA, close to where my late Aunt's house is located. About a half a block south on Rimpau there was a car double parked on the west side of the road. All of a sudden someone cranked 5 rounds into the nearest house and the vehicle took off, going away from us. The police station is within about 10 blocks but the response time was still around 30 min.
Where I used to live was about 5 blocks from Nicole Simpson's place. Very good part of town, unlike Rimpau. I used to take an evening walk up Bundy, east on San Vicente, then south on Barrington. I used to go around the time of the evening news. I could easily have walked up on that scene.
Less than a block from Nicole's place is where the so-called Ninja murders took place in the building's parking garage.
My neighbors thought I was a bit "off" to have my Sig 226 with me while working on my Bronco in our condo parking area in Brentwood. Until the Skid Row Slasher offed himself in a motel room about 100 feet away...
I guess my point is that bad things can certainly happen in a questionable neighborhood like Rimpau, but they can also happen in upscale areas.
