On the old forum BillMc once posted a picture of the patches used while cleaning a gun. I had several guns to clean up from a range session so I decided to save the patches on a couple of them, just to see what they looked like.

Here are the cleaning patches from a M70 on top and a M700 on the bottom. Both are 270 caliber and were fired exactly 15 times each. For cleaning I used Barnes CR10 solvent with a Tipton one piece rod, a metal jag and a bore guide. This was my first time using Barnes and I was pretty pleased with the results. In both cases the first 12 patches were using the solvent, followed by a dry patch, then an oil patch, and then a final dry patch. For consistency I used 5 strokes for each patch.

Oddly, by looking at and comparing the patches side by side the M70 seemed to be the dirtiest but cleaned up faster than the M700.

The last few patches with the solvent came out pretty clean but both guns could have used another 2-3 patches to reach a state of pristine cleanliness. But frankly by this point I was tired of cleaning guns, and 98% perfect was good enough for me. Overall I cleaned five guns and had been cleaning for two hours.

Are these patches fairly consistent with what you see while cleaning guns? What is your favorite cleaning solvent? Anyone else use and like the Barnes?

I`ve switched to WipeOut for my rifles. I give the bore a shot and set it down for the night, the next morning a quick dry patching normally leaves a clean barrel. A light oiled patch followed by a dry one and the rifle is ready to go in the safe. I like the fact no brush is needed and the cleaner does all the work.
Heavy carbon or lead in handgun barrels requires a bit more work. I use RemClean for that, it`s a mild abrasive though and I try to be sparing with it.

Yes, I am trying to get away from abrasion (i.e. brushes) and want to find a solvent which does the job with only a jag and a patch. The Barnes does this but as you can see it takes a lot of patches to accomplish the job.
