All of us are concerned about protecting our surplus arms. Here is an excellent article that may be helpful. All the best...

Gil,

Fine link. I use the Old Army Manual procedure of cleaning the bore and then wiping the arm inside and out with G.I. Mil Spec Rifle Grease. RIG will work if the Mil Spec Grease is not available. The Army has stored many more guns than we will ever see, so I use their methods.

I also use dessicant packets in my vaults and recharge them when the blue dot turns pink by cooking them in the oven for 8 hours.

I've posted that link several times on other forums in the past. It is a great comparison.

This is an excellent link. However about twenty years ago, no, 25 years ago I had one side of a couple guns accumulate some surface rust on the side facing the wall while sitting in an open gun rack.

At the time I was living in the officer quarters at Ft Bliss in Texas. I was able to clean the rust off but had some light pitting. These quarters were cinder block construction and with the typical swamp coolers.

To prevent further problems I sprayed the guns with WD- 40. Two problems occured. When going dove hunting with the AYA SxS 20 ga shot gun, I found the safety would not move to the firing position. The problem was resolved by sliding a very thin razor blade under the safety and breaking loose the WD-40. No forther problems were encountered with that gun.

The other rifle a Remington 721 would release the firing pin as soon as the safety was moved off safe. I cleaned the the action thoroughly along with the bolt. Still experiencing periodic problems, I took the rifle to a gunsmith. He did several cleanings along with two more smiths. I still continued to have rare failures with the safety. I had used this rifle for many years without problems before the WD-40. I am still extremely careful with this rifle and never permit anyone besides me to shoot it.

I've had good results with the Boeshield T-9. The only downside is that it dries to sort of a milky finish, so it's not suitable for display guns.
