I was looking at one of these in a Gander mt store yesterday in Watertown NY. Off the shelf the gun felt pretty good in my hands. It felt solidly built, nice wood ,had decent open sites installed ie nice brass bead on the front and a strongly mounted rear site with a white diamond notch indicator a definate step up from what used to be placed on them. The safety was an easy access push button located behind the hammer on the rear stock much nicer than the ones built right into the hammer that have been previously sold on winchester rifles. It also seemed reasonably priced at 3 and change.
The only negative imo was perhaps the bluing finish was not great.
Although I would have to try one in the field for a real test...it did pass my off the shelf test.
I gave it a thumbs up!
Anybody else own one or have any information on this rifle ? I would like to hear your thoughts.

I've only seen three of these rifles. If Winchester does not bring the 94 back Mossberg could have a winner here. I saw two in gun shops. One had much better bluing than the other. Wood and fit was OK. Although I really like the 94 and the action, the Mossberg safety is a good idea and seems to work well.
The third one at the range was scoped and getting just over one inch three shot groups. The owner said he broke two extractors. Said Mossberg customer service was great and sent him free replacements. Mossberg offered to replace the parts at the factory but he did it himself. After he replaced the first extractor he received the a second one in the mail which he just put away. He broke the second extractor after around 60 shots but he said he has been working the action [opening and closing to help smooth it out] probably over 500 times.
He thought the third extractor was a little stronger and better finished. He has fired at least 300 rounds with it. The action is starting to smooth out as compared to when it was new.
He likes the gun and his son is thinking about getting one. They have been using it some when hunting coyotes.

Smokey,
Although just one case ...it sounds like there might be a weak extractor problem with these rifles. However if the folks at Mossberg can get it fixed then they just might have the next 94 or should I say 464 model generation. It would be nice imo if someone could produce and sell this style of a firearm for hunting and sporting needs.Hope they succeed!

I remember years ago they built a .30-30 that looked much like a Marlin 336 though I understand internally it was very different.

I understand the extractor problem has been resolved. I am sure there are still many rifles around with the weaker parts. If Winchester doesn't bring the 94 back this will be a nice addition to the market.
