My advice is to use some common sense... biking along a river known to be a feeding place for sows and cubs at 2 AM may not be a smart thing to do.

I would keep something besides birdshot in my shotgun to keep a bear away from my dogs.

It's a big city and as all cities, has a sizable portion of idiots.
Eventually, the bears will lose. :(

SWAMP very good point made! Glad to be back and thanks for the effort too.
I would not trust a 44 mag pistol to rid off a grizzly or large black bear. Now just think about the facts for a minute. A 44 magnum pisol is far less in power than a plan jane 30-30 rifle and I for one am never going to face a grizzly with a whitetail deer caliber.
So if your thinking of pistols my friends, think BIGGER OK. Yes, and by all means you better practice a bunch, so you can hit the target. NO sub nosed 38, .357 mag or 45acp is going to turn a bear with cubs back. A 44 mag is minimum but I want bigger let me tell you.

On the average there are only a mauling a year in the area. Although '08 salmon ran late pushing bears to find other food sources and a sow was all over the trials rising attacks to 8 or 9.

You can bet money on surprise being the reason for most bear attacks, they usually do not knowingly attack humans.
Anchorage is not a huge city at 260,000 but the idiots still remain abundant.
Handgun is common practice as bear deterrent seeing as most bears that attack either do by surprise or poor visibility. All sprays do is add bad eyesight and does not shorten their reach, make them slower, or their teeth less sharp.
You can carry a cannon around if you want, I'll just count on not being an idiot and do my best not to spook any bears.

If your in bear country, you best figure on seeing a bear or two before your stay is over no matter what length of time you put on the calendar. It is one thing to see a bear coming at you in a charge but 50% or better never see that bear until it is right on top of them or when they are in the tent at night.
My advice is keep that rifle at arms length at all times, even when you visit the privy my friends. A good 30-06 stoked with 200 or 220 grain bullets will take care of the bears in 90% of most cases. However, I prefer at least .338 Win mag caliber and 250 grain permium bullets. Never take bears for granted or lightly people, doing so could very well change your life to bear DUNG!!!

I watched a show about the bear attacks in anchorage about two weeks ago and they concluded that only one sow with cubs was doing the attacks. The local fish and game proceded to kill off that bear.
