209 primers. I have been useing standard shotgun (Winchester) primers. They have "muzzleloader" primers out there now, but is it just a marketing hype? Supposedly they help keep the proverbial crud ring down, but do they? How about a "magnum" primer? Are they to hot? Lots of questions, but maybe you guys have tried or heard if there is a better primer to use. The standard works for me, is it worth it to try something else?

I haven't made the 209 switch yet and am interested in this too.

I kinda suspect it's mostly about the money.

There must be differences or Knight would not reccommend Winchster W-209's. I suspect some breechplugs may require hotter spark than others due to dimensions.

I know I was somewhat surprised when I learned that caps from the same lot shoot more accurately and changing brands changes poi completely.

I figure primers may be the same.

I am satisfied with the W-209's but wanted to try something else. Bought a box of someother brand that was labeled 209M thinking it was for muzzleloader. Dumb me, turned out to be magnum primers. Haven't tried them yet, hense the questions.

Yes... The muzzleloader primers are weaker, which is a good thing. Standard 209's are too powerful and can jump the load off base before it ignites, causing erratic patterns. The ML primers, I believe, are basically .410 shotgun primers.

It's amazing how powerful a standard 209 primer is. You can shoot a 240gr sabot about 30 yards with just a primer alone in the Encore.

I hope that wasn't with a 10 pointer standing 40 yards away :D

THAT'S happened to more than a few front-stuffers :o

No... that was actually in my basement, and the 30 yards is an estimate based on how hard it hit the far wall at a range of 17 yards.

At one time playing around with how to use just a primer and a plastic bullet to do target practice in my basement with the Encore. The idea is that if it'll throw a 240gr bullet say 100 fps, maybe it would throw a light plastic bullet fast enough to do some target practice in the basement during the winter. I didn't find the right plastic bullet, and lost interest in the project.

Now you're gonna have me fooling around with patched (or maybe just greased ) cork roundballs in the GPR!

Good luck!
I tried this with open-breach #11 guns (White Rifles), but it didn't work.
It doesn't seem to seal well enough. The cap breaks apart, and doesn't hold the pressure in.

OTOH... the sealed action of the Encore is dandy. :D

Probably would work with an Omega too.
