Hey thanks for the heads up. I set my alarm on my cell phone as a reminder to watch it. That must be the story that Charles Bronson played in Death Hunt.

Now to all, lets see if yall can guess the make and model of the rifle Charles Bronson carried in that movie ? ;)

Years ago a friend and I canoed 300 miles down the MacMillan River in the Yukon. About half way down was a camp/trading post that used to be called Russell Post. Its one claim to fame was that the Mad Trapper had once traded there.

That is correct. Now what was that carbine-looking rifle that Lee Marvin had?

Believe it or not, he was actually somewhat rich...

On Johnson’s person were found 32 kidney pills, $2,410 dollars in large bills, both Canadian and American (worth approximately $60,000 today), and two glass jars, one containing five pearls, and the other, seven gold pieces of dental work. He was also found with a .22 Winchester rifle, a model 99 .30-30 Savage, 39 .30-30 ammunition shells, 84 .22 shells and four shotgun shells.

"Seven gold pieces of dental work"... I Wonder who donated those? http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sad/sad0071.gif

My appologies to you Americans.Silly me..I thought that the program would be aired in the USA as well.Sorry guys!
Anyways .... to those who didn't catch the show it didn't go as I had presumed. It was interesting with actions scenes depicting the last days of the Mad trapper inserted in between the documentary of how they exhumed and tested the body samples for DNA etc.
However... I among many others i'm sure were expecting a break through on who the Mad Trapper was. This didn't happen ..infact the DNA proved that he was not related to anyone of the top contenders not even Johnny Johnson decendants.
Infact now they have no idea at all who he may have been...except that dental examinations showed that he had, had top notch dental work done sometime before coming to the North country. They concluded that this would of cost big coin in those days and he may have had wealth at some point in his previous life. They also thought the dental material that he was found with at death may have been his own. They also believe he was in great pain suffering from scoliosis of the spinal column. They were able to determine that during his last six months or more he was severely lacking protein in his diet leading some to believe he may have lifted the traps to get meat to eat.
He was a scary lookin dude runnin around with a homemade ski mask on.The action scene plus forensic evidence showed that the final bullet that killed him was a .303 british through the right buttock then lower back into the stomach area. Ouch!! He had taken I think it was nine hits altogether and his .30-30 savage never halted rapid firing wounding one of the pursuers and nearly killing a second until the fatal wound occured.
And so the legend and mystery of the Mad Trapper saga continues......

I have been folowing this Saga for years--esp when I lived in AK(74-98) and a year or more ago the Buzz started again--I don't know if I want to know who he was or like the continuing mystery better? IMHO some stories/legends are better without an ending.

Krag-Jorgensen
Used by Sgt Edgar Millen(Lee Marvin)

He also used a Winchester Model 1912 as did the Mad Trapper.

(I had to look it up :o ;) )

Theree was a Canadian movie about him that was much more accurate then the Hollywood version. It aired on PBS in the USA sometimes in the '70s.

I would like to watch it again.
