142 days until bears season opens for me, not that I am counting or anything. :)

Of course some guys are probably hunting them right now or pretty soon out west or up in Canada.

Here is a proud mama and her five (yes five!) additions on the year they were born and the following spring. Pretty good shape for that big a brood.
I've seen tripplets, and of coarse twins ar common, but this is the largest brood I have ever seen.

In PA the game commission has regularly been able to add orphaned cubs to the den of another mother and cup. The mothers seem to readily accept new additions with few problems. I was wondering if that was the situation with this many cubs. Either way, still a remarkable photo of a unique wildlife event.

In all my days, I have never heard of five bear cubs in one brood! Holy Cow, that mother is going to be working her rearend off and no time to sleep. Astonishing to see 5 cubs and 1 sow bear!:cool::cool:

no step-cubs there to my knowledge.:D

What is just as amazing, maybe even more-so, is the fact that all cubs made it to thier first birthday,

As Memory serves I think the dread Dr. Alt was the first to pioneer that wasn't he? Back when he managed the bear program so successfully that it led to a new and more challenging assignment?:D
