I think people in South Korea and Japan are digging them now. The people in California will soon be looking for illegals to help them dig some shelters.

We may need them sooner than we think.

Some of my neighbors used to have them when I was a kid. These days, I've read that it is quite expensive to set up a really serious bomb shelter. Even a substantial "safe room" for defense against criminals costs a lot in my city. I'm thinking of simply moving to a less likely target than Los Smogeles.:D

Of course, you could probably set up a minimal, short-term shelter for a reasonable amount of dough. I assume it just depends on how much security and staying power you are willing to pay for.

What features do you desire?

I've got the keys to the cadaver vault at the local cemetery. It's 12 feet underground and has 2' thick reinforced concrete walls/ceiling. Does that count ?:D

No I don't have a bomb shelter. I'm not one of those paranoid, right-wing-extremest, the government-is-out-to-get-me, survivalist, types who is clinging to my guns and religion. Oh, wait a minute, come to think of it "I Am!!!" But I still don't have a Bomb Shelter.

When you know you're a target, your bomb shelter better be a good one. :D

At least here in lost-in-the-desert so. Idaho, there's nothing anybody would would target with a nuke. We might get some wind drift from Portland, though.

Where I work at the New Hampshire State Library, the solid granite walls are 12 inches thick and 2 stories high. That is if you don't count the level below ground. The lower level is a documented bomb shelter with markers indicating that it is so. It is also the best place to go to beat the summer heat. There is no air conditioning throughout the upper floors so any heat that gets in stays in. In that low level however the basement is always about 60 to 65 degrees. This is where I would make a beeline for when the s!!t hits the fan!

It's difficult to guess whether a bomb shelter would be any better than being mobile, especially after the initial attack.

Who wants to bet the gov would stop people from moving about at will in an effort to 'control' the situation?

I used to hang out in it when i was a kid.....Its some kind of metal prefab number from the cold war days. Now its just a wine cellar you can sleep in.Not sure if it would really help in case of nuclear war(haha),but it was a great place to act like "Rambo" when i was a kid.....Hey i grew up in the eighties!!!!

You won't move very far if the power is out. You can't fill your car if the pumps don't work. Think of the chaos of 200K people trying to get out of town with no working signal lights.

Yeah, look back at Katrina. The Sheriff way Nth of N.O. had his deputies pointing shouldered AR-15's at everybody they stopped, and they took everybody's firearms, only to be sued by the NRA . That episode alone showed the non-professionalism of many police here. Maybe in New Orl. city limits, but not way nth. in the rural areas. You can only imagine the out-of-controlness in a nuke aftermath.

One person could not carry enough bullets to deal with the number of have nots that are going to wanting what the haves have. It's going to be a very bad situation that even the best community organizer in the world will have trouble screwing up any worse.
