I cast many different bullets for my military bolt rifles. I have found cast bullets in the 160 to 215 grain range great in the .30-06, 7x57mm, 7.62mm, 7.65mm, 7.7mm, .303 and 8mm. The main difference I found from jacketed loads is less recoil and a bit more elevation needed to get point of aim/point of impact at 100 yards.

I cast my bullets out of free wheelweights I get at the local tire shop. I drop the bullets from the moulds into a bucket of water to double the Brinell hardness which results in no bore leading. With the cost of jacketed bullets going higher everyday, I think many others will find cast bullets a way to keep shooting the old military arms in today's economy.

I am happy to report that this morning my cast bullet loads in the M1898 Krag .30/40 rifle shot to the sights at 100 yards. I loaded 18 grains of 2400 behind the Lyman #311467 cast gas check bullet weighing 177 grains and 77.5mm overall cartridge length.

My 150 grain jacketed handloaded bullets also shoot to the sights with the battle sight at 100 yards. My jacketed bullets are for deer and the cast are now my target loads for the rest of the Summer.

If you cannot find jacketed bullets on the local gun shop shelves, cast what you need.
