okay i will bail out GM this time but this is the last time i will do it!
And no more than $50 billion of my bail out money can go towards bonuses for GM executives... do you think that I am being to hard on the executives?
Why should we be hard on them? Just because they 'managed' one of the biggest companies into the ground by building a surplus of ugly, boring, unreliable, gas-guzzling cars that nobody wanted?
Can't give 'em all the credit, though. They never could've done it without those 'good' Union workers....
Seriously.... The senior management heffed it big-time, but did they really get away with any bigger a scam than the union bosses who insisted on a payroll & benefits burden that the company would never be able to support?
I've got a buddy - maybe 20 years older than I am - who worked for a very long time as a mechanic. And he tells me that the build quality on American cars has gone way, way up in the past 20 years. So while they may not have appreciated just how good a deal they were getting, I guess you can't say that the employees didn't hold up their end out there on the line.
On the other hand... If there are people willing to do your job for less money than you're making, that's a pretty clear indicator that the supply of what you have to offer (labor, in this case) is outstripping the demand. And any union that goes out on strike when they're already doing better than the employees at a competitor's shop ..... Suffice to say they need a reality check, not a bigger check...
So I fall back on 'WWMMD?' What would my Mom do?
And I'll tell you this... She's a good-hearted person. She doesn't want to see anybody getting a raw deal, and she's OK with the fact that sometimes that means she'll have to pay a little more for something. But when she found out that the cashiers at the local grocery store were out on 'strike' when they were already making more money and getting better bennies than my brother, the high-school advanced-placement biology teacher, well, let's just say that the strikers struck out....
