Has anyone hunted them? I was at Rio Bonito and saw some on my last day and on my way out! How typical! Anyway they looked intriging. Just wanted to see if anyone has taken one.

No, most places I have hunted in the Hill Country had sheep/goat fencing.
Were they multicolored Spanish goats or Angora?

I am totally sold on a wild Auodad hunt soon in West Tx.

While I can still climb and carry one out!

I have and a friend did a couple of years back. We killed in just the first 3 days; we have SCI trophies on our walls.

I used to work in West Texas and was able to hunt auodad on private land near (nothing is really near anything out there) Fort Davis, long ago. There seem to be even more out there today. There are some federal and state lands there that surely must have some hunting on them. Some of the prices I see advertised seem to be out of line, because this isn't a Rockies sheep tag that you have to wait 20 years for a draw and fly in to a base camp. I am going to look into it, because I would like to go do it again.

Just curious... Wouldn't feral goats receive (and richly deserve) all of the same protections as feral hogs once they cross onto public land?

They don't multiply as fast as hogs, but they have the same potential to ruin the landscape for the natives....

Yes whild goats are avaliable in taxes and the hunters are restricted for hunting them but some peoples use to hunt them and some people use them as their business sell milk and meet also.

Back when I lived in Austin, I hunted wild goats a few times in the Hill County. The area I hunted was a couple hours West of Austin and the property, like much of the Hill Country, was about crawling with whitetail, axis, piggies, with some black buck, and in this case, lots and lots of goats. Dopey little things they were. Felt bad shooting them. It was too easy. I still hunted them as if I was after whitetail in VT or Maine in thick cover, just creeping along. The goats just milled around eating and goofing off and it was quite easy to slip up on them. I blasted a few with my .7mm Rem. Mag and I was surely over-gunned. I recall a baby goat bedded as I walked up to a couple goats I had dropped and I just stared at the little guy, was thinking about grabbing him for a pet, but as I paused to consider the situation, he ran away on wobbly little legs. Cute little bugger! Anyway, quartered up the goats and gave the meat away to some Mexicans I knew. They do wonders with it and if I recall correctly, it is called Cabritto??? or something similar. I was not brave enough to try to cook it without someone skilled to help.

Bottom line, yes there are piles of feral goats in some parts of Texas and they are very easy and fun to hunt. I think a handgun hunt would be the perfect way to chase them and keep it challenging.
