I read a lot about guns and learn quite a bit. I just finished reading "Gun Digest, The Magazine", the July 6, 2009 edition, and finally identified a single action S&W revolver I picked up in a trade long ago.
Smith & Wesson made some .38 S&W caliber SA revolvers in the era 1877-1911. Mine is the Second Model made between 1877-1891. I gathered from the article that the author routinely fires current factory ammo in his 2ND Model revolver. I cleaned mine up and will donate it to the historical society to go along with the old guns they put on display in their museum.
The publication has interesting historical articles in each issue and I recommend it to folks interested in firearms history.
