Let's suppose that you have centerfire rifles from .223 - 300 WinMag. If you wanted to stock up on powders what would they be?

Right now I would lean toward IMR3031 and HMR4831. Maybe even include some RL-19 or 22 for good measure.

What would be your choices?

IMR 4895. IMO, it is the all purpose powder. I use other powders but if I had to choose one to stock up on that would be the one.

With the shortage of reloading components out there I'd stock up on whatever powder you find that loads up for any of your rifles IMHO.

StringJumper,

I agree with Alan, get some IMR4895. In addition, I would get some H414, IMR4350 and IMR4198. I like 4198 with cast bullets in the rifles for target sessions over the Summer. Also, 4198 is used in reduced jacketed loads for practice.

IMR4064 for me. Works great in my .243, .308 and .30-30.

Back in the Day, way before my time, my father and grandfather got, from somewhere, a large quantity of surplus 30-06 ammo with corrosive primers. They didn't want to use the primers because of the PITA of cleaning with hot, soapy water each time, besides primers were cheap then. They pulled the bullets and salvaged the powder. It looked and performed like 4895 and they always told me that's what it was. They never mixed it with 4895 but used it with the same loadings. My grandfather used it for a lot of years. Consequently I worked up lots of loads for various calibers with it as well. It was not until I was much older that I began trying different powders. He used it because it was cheap and he enjoyed shooting so it was the best of all worlds. I still have about 500 or so rounds of primed brass from those days and about 100 rounds of loaded ammo that they never got around to pulling. I'll probably just save it for a time when shooting is more important than cleaning or something like that.

My other favorite is H4831 and H4831SC. I don't find it versatile enough to get down into the 222 categories but I do like it for 270 and up.

In rounds 300 Savage - 308 Win I have found that Win748 does a great job. It meters well and it allows for accuracy and velocity without compressed loads.

I think it depends on what is between 223 and 300mag. I load 17machIV thru 300RUM and if I had to 6/7 powders would work for me.

With these two powders, I would be fully covered. All the best...
