White House: US May Confront Ships Near N. Korea Save Email Print

The Obama administration says it is prepared to confront ships believed to be carrying contraband materials to North Korea but will not try to forcibly board them.

U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said Friday that U.S. officials would seek permission to board and inspect such vessels in a bid to curb North Korea's nuclear weapons ambitions.

She said the ships would be directed to a nearby port for inspection if they could not be boarded at sea.

The U.N. Security Council on Friday punished North Korea for its second nuclear test by imposing tough new sanctions.

Rice said it would not be surprising if North Korea reacted to the sanctions with "further provocation."

Rice said: "There's reason to believe they may respond in an irresponsible fashion to this."

But she said the U.S. will focus on the enforcement of the multilateral sanctions, which she said she expects to have significant impact on North Korea's financing of its weapons and missile.

As much as I dislike this administration it does appear prepared to be tougher on Korea than any in 16 years. If it sticks to its guns then it will be the first in a longtime that has not reponded to blackmail by increasing food supplies and other goods. It will be interesting to see what the response will be when the ships refuse to be boarded and further ignores instructions to proceed to port.

It's been reported that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has privately suggested that in light of recent developments her pantsuits could be used as a missile shield against North Korea.

Wouldn't work. They already have people like Pelosi running their country.

Previous administratioms have not dealt harshly with NK because they were not tested as often in such short a time as this one has been. I believe that's because they may have known better to a small degree. I think NK senses weakness in this Pres.; just as all those that voted against him did.

Can't think of any worse torture than to be in the same room with both Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi.

That's cruel and sadistic to wish that on any human being .....

But are we really talking about human beings??? We could send Al Gore and he could bore them to death. How about they be forced to have sex with Hillery and Polosi, might be too cruel huh?
