View Full Version : Did they scramble GPS signals again?

I've been using the same GPS for years and this week it started doing something that has me really confused. I have a good way point in from other trips and when I hit go to it points me to the way point. All good until I get within about 200 feet of the waypoint, then the go to arrow is still pointing to the waypoint, but the distance to the waypoint starts going up instead of the distance going down. I am reading off a lot of satelites and have seen the accuracy reading down to within 7 feet. About the only thing I can figure is that they have scrambled the signal again. What are any of you guys seeing? I did loan the unit to my kid a while back, but it works fine except for this.

What, may I ask, are you people doing in the hot June summer that you are using GPS ? I had to think where I stowed mine at back in March.

The river is 3 miles wide where I was fishin yesterday. I purdy much know it like the back of my hand but it still gives me an excuse to play with the gps, markin where I catch em at. :)

Lake Erie is 250 miles long, and up to 50 miles wide. It's hard to pinpoint a spot when your far from shore, and they work great for setting up trolling patterns.

The newer ones now have maps in them and they take pictures or movies of the maps or the bottoms of the spot your fishing over. Here's a couple of pictures from mine.

The first one is an area about 26 X 14 miles. The blue dots are fishing areas I marked.

The second one is zoomed into a trolling pattern I use for night fishing on the Canadian side. It's part of the small blue cluster of marks you see in the upper right of the first picture.

The 3rd one is a picture it took of the actual bottom of the lake showing the rocks at the start of the shoal shown in the 2nd picture.

The 4th is showing the actual trail we made on that spot trolling one night when we caught a limit of walleyes. The spot marked "WALL" on the 2nd picture is exactly where I took the 3rd picture, which shows a quick drop on the shoal from 11 to 23 feet. We catch a ton of walleyes there.

Thats what I do with mine :) You could say "It helps some" :D:D

Problem solved. The key was having loaned it to my kid who changed magnetic north to true north and changed the pointer setting so that the screen showed compass marks when he was running a property line. All good again with resetting it back. It probably cost me a few fish because I could not find the sunken reefs the way he had it. Reading off 11 satelites out in the lake, so accuracy should be excellent. Lesson learned is be careful when you loan your stuff out. Thanks.
