View Full Version : Had an oops moment

I finished loads for a 300wm, and noticed one had a slightly wobbley bottom.
The primer is just not quite seated to full depth. So, what do you do, pull the bullet and start over, or go ahead and seat the primer the rest of the way?
It's what I get from doing case prep in front of the TV I guess.;)

Pull the bullet and start over. I would never try to seat a primer on a loaded round. Paranoia? Maybe, but the good kind!
Or... you could just save that round and shoot it as the first warm up round to dirty the barrel, or the last round of the day.

If you use the Lee primer you could take it outdoors and try seating it. If it goes off, just make sure you have some kids around to appreciate the fireworks... There'll be a good flame but the bullet will not launch fast enough to go through much more than a piece of pine board at close distance as there's no barrel to build velocity nor create recoil.

Well, I would not shoot the round as any number of things could happen prior to getting the bolt closed. Probably wouldn't go off till you're ready but it could. I wouldn't seat the primer the rest of the way (although I have done this before) because there could be a reason why it did not seat to depth in the first place and it may not be because you didn't put enough pressure. If it went off it would probably only put an eye out at worst depending on how you seat your primers.
I would, at this stage of my development probably pull the bullet pour the powder out and seat the primer. To ad lib Bill Mac's Tattoo thread, I try to ask myself:
How am I going to explain this to the Dr. in the ER?
Then I try to keep from having to explain anything at all.

Yeah, I thought about standing in the doorway of the shed, stick my arm out with the cartridge and primer seater, and hide behind the wall as I finish seating. Left handed of course.
Probably just better to throw that one in the ooops pile and sort it out with any other surprises that come along until I get a bullet puller.

Put it in the shell holder and take the die out of the press. Run it up through the hole and grab the bullet gently with a pair of pliers. push the handle down and the bullet will slide right out.

dave-t,
I do my reloading in the upstairs reloading room that only has a radio. One cannot watch TV, chat on the phone or argue with the wife AND reload. I check every primed case by feel of my index finger before I go to the charging stage.
I would pull that bullet and reuse the components.

Not a big deal to pull the bullet. I have reseated the primer (carefully) on a loaded round several times with no problems, but luck could run out. In the amount of time you spent reading this thread you could have pulled the bullet & reseated the primer. But you know you should size the case again because the mouth will not be perfect due to pulling the bullet. Yep, best thing is to start all over. Go easy when you punch out the primer & look for the cause.

That's a good tip, and a timely one. I need to pull about fifty 257 bullets and that may help. (Long story but the short version is I did not do it. ;))

How am I going to explain this to the Dr. in the ER?
And another good tip and words to live by...and one that reminds me of the supposedly true story about a man, a gerbil, a plastic tube, and an emergency room. But we can't tell that one here, can we?

StringJumper,
About that getbil and the ER. First, that is Reloading-of a sort. Yes, it is true as a relative of mine was in the ER and the gerbil was safely "pulled", as it were. LOL. As far as I can determine, a HIGH Primer was not the cause. Other items were a light bulb and a mustard jar, with lid on, which made "pulling" a bit more difficult. No, the light bulb did not break on "pulling." Rest assured the ER doctor was not amused.

The ER story I remember was that his companion used a match to check where the gerbil was, resulting in a small gas explosion.

And a lighter.
Not a big deal to pull the bullet. I would be curious as to whether it was my fault or a problem with the case & the primer pocket.

I have used the remove Die and run Loaded round up thought it pull bullet with Pliers
I do have a Hammer puller now but If I had gone through all the weighing of the powder I'd rather pull one or 2 using the Press so I then can Carefully pour the Powder back onto the weight pan in stead of it in the hammer I have to dis-mantle re-mantle
I am Lucky to have a rock crusher jr. that has no use so I just put the Brass holder in it and pull
AS to the Question:
I feel you would be taking a Fools Bet in Pressing the Cap on a Live round when you will only be set back a moment or two to pull it.

I pulled the bullet and reset the primer. It wasn't a big deal. The cartridge would still stand up, but had a tad bit of lean to it, and that is how I noticed it.
While I'm here, 71.5grn Re-19, hornady 180, win large rifle mag primer looks pretty good so far.
I've loaded a few for my 257 Roberts, but haven't shot for accuracy yet. It's a run-off between the 117grn hornady @ 2900fps and the 100grn ttsx @ 3050fps.
