I cleaned my mosin nagant M1891-30 last night from about 20 shots. I ran through a patch with solvent on it and removed a lot of powder residue. I flipped the patch over and ran it again. Still a lot of powder. I did two more patches in the same way getting similar amounts of powder residue out each time. I ran two patches through dry, first on one side then flipping it over and running through again. They had less powder on them but still a significant amount. I am shooting Silver Bear 203 grain soft points. I don't know if the ammo is the problem or what. Should I be getting this much powder residue out out of the gun?

sharpshooter94,
What solvent are you using?
If you really want to clean your rifle, I suggest you run a wet solvent patch through the bore and then run a wet TIGHT brass/copper bore brush through the bore a dozen times and then run a wet solvent patch or two followed by a dry patch or two and an oil patch. If the ammo was corrosive or "mildly corrosive" run hot soapy through the bore FIRST to remove the corrosive residue. I put the hot soapy water in a coffee can and put the muzzle into the water and run the patches and brush into the water and back. Then I remove the muzzle for dry patches and an oil patch.

The only thing that I have to clean the gun with is a rod and jag. All I used was patches. The ammo did not say that it was corrosive but maybe I'll try the hot soapy water next time. I used Hoppes 9 powder solvent. I did run an oil patch through at the end and still got powder residue out. I got to the point where I said "Screw it I gonna use more in patches to clean this thing than the gun is worth."

sharpshooter94,
I think the bore brush is your answer. Hoppes#9 is ok, IF the ammo is non-corrosive.

G.I. bore cleaner or hot soapy water patches will deal with corrosive ammo issues. That can be followed by gun solvent, brushing with J.B. Bore Cleaner or Remington Bore Cleaner, dry patches and oil patches. There is a lot of surplus ammo around that may or may not be corrosive. When in doubt, treat it as if it were corrosive. Take care...
