Any Ideas?

SureI have at least one.

Call and complain about the quality of service your being delivered.

Let them know you have paid for 24 hours of service, and since there not rendering said services that you wish to be compensated.

Find a different provider if your not satisfied.

We've been letting them know daily. They're trying to figure out what's wrong.

... yesterday he wondered if the water tank was low on water. (our signal comes from the water tower about 3 miles away.)

The only other option I have is dialup so I have to be kinda nice about it.

It appears they have you as a very dedicated customer then.

Without a different option for net service your pretty well at there mercy.
I dont feel there is anything you can do on your part to resolve the issue at hand, and in time they should be able to resolve the problems your having.

As a side note I'm guessing you have already spoken with your Satelite/cable tv provider to see if net service was a option?

I agree a heavy hand is not the way to resolve this issue, but a request to be compensated for loss of service should be reasonable.

Not as a fix but a crutch while you are working out the issues with your carrier,

My ISP allows a number of free dial-up access hours along with my broadband account. From 40 to 100 hours per month. It is for business people and enthusiasts with laptops when they travel. It can also be used at home if the modem goes down or other problems arise.

I use it when I go to my parents and a friends house with any of a couple pc's and a laptop.

What I'm saying is, when you have no broadband, ask your ISP if they will allow you dial-up during those periods for free.

and hopefully the water tower gets filled in the meantime... :p

Are things any better?

some days are better than others. Today service started degrading about noon and by 12:20 I could not get a web page to load. Tonight at around 9:30 it started to work again but it's just getting up to speed now.

The techs were suppose to be out here Sat but no one made it.

Compound that with the google redirect virus I've picked up and the puter experience ain what it use to be. :D

The tech showed up today but the system was working fine when he got here. He obviously knows broadband and he checked some things but did nothing other than set the puter so he could monitor it from the isp. Apparantly some new stuff is in the works soon that should greatly improve the speed and service here.

We talked at length and once again I was offered a job.

If its not you and something isn't wrong with their modem then....

We had a problem here 3 or 4 years ago in the fall evenings when there would be a 15 to 20 degree temp change and it was a bad node at one of the main junctions. They don't like replacing them and it takes a lot of people griping for them to do it.

Some of the things you can do is download a free program called ping plotter that will trace your path and you'll see where you are losing packets of data or getting dropped. The ISP can normally see all of this when the head guy looks at the network and see where the problem is. Getting them to replace expensive components takes being a bigger pain in their rears than not fixing it.

I think you can also join up at dslreports.com and they have a trace application you can monitor your line with so that you can hand the ISP a printout and say fix the network here and my problem gets solved.

I'm almost sure I'm not getting the whole story.

I find it a wonder of the world that my internet speed suddenly jumped to 'like new' 15 minutes before the guy showed up yesterday and hasn't degraded at all since.

He also showed me how to track and/or locate which server is handling my traffic but all that is only mildly interesting to me and I'd have to go back to my notes of the conversation to do it.

Anyway, for now the isp is good. This virus the puter has is something else however. I gotta get rid of it somehow.
