View Full Version : Bill, when do you use both transducers?

I bought a new transducer bracket this week so that I can mount my Quadrabeam transducer off the side of the boat so that one side will not be looking into the lower unit of the outboard. I have ordered that A-B switch that you recommended in an earlier thread so that I will be able to use the standard side imaging transducer too. I do like the wider cone angle of the Quadrabeam and the left right and below split screen option that gives me, but being a card carrying analytical, I did miss the actual sonar view of what I was over. Now I will be able to use both like you do, but I'm wondering how you use either transducer when you are actually in a fishing situation?

I don't use them at the same time if that is what your asking.
I very seldom use the side-imaging at all unless I'm trolling in water less than 25' deep.
Otherwise I'm using the QuadraBeam...
If I'm trolling a pattern using way-points on a map, I'll use a view showing GPS, and regular 2D sonar on a split screen.
Is that what your asking?

Bill, I know that you can't use them both at the same time, hence that A-B switch. I just wondered if you ever used the side imaging feature to confirm actual structure once you have located fish? I know that you fish Lake Erie a lot and those fish probably do not relate to structure as much as fish in smaller lakes would. We hit an area in Canada these last few years where the walleyes were really concentrated just inside the rock line between weeds on one side and mud on the other. Having that side imaging screen really helped me visualize what kind of structure those fish were relating to so that I could look for it in other parts of the lake.
Most of our walleye and perch fishing is in 25' of water and less. We did use GPS all the time when we went after the trout and salmon in Lake Michigan and your walleye fishing sounds very similar to that. Outriggers, boards and down-riggers.

The way your explaining your use is exactly what I would do in a shallow water area of Erie. We troll shallows at night.
The SI does really show what your fishing. There's a couple shallows we fish that were really different in appearance on the screen, as opposed to what I Thought they would look like.
I don't know how anyone that fishes professionally (more bass than walleye) could fish without a Humminbird and hope to keep winning.
