I was driving home from our property yesterday, and stopped at a garage sale. I was actually looking for books 6 and 7 of the Harry Potter series, but took the time to peruse what else they had. Much to my delight and surprise, I found a copy of The Greatest Story Ever Told and The Big Fisherman. They were marked $.25 apiece, so I picked them up. Turns out it was two for one day, so I got them both for a quarter. I gave them to my son, and encouraged him to read them. Don't know if he will, but I'll give him brownie points if he does.
Have you guys read any of those old books that I would consider Christians Classics? I would include [B]Quo Vadis, Ben Hur, The Robe[/I] and [B]In His Steps[/I] in that category. Maybe a few more I can't think of. Silver Chalice, maybe.
At any rate, they're good reads, and I'd recommend them.

Seen the flicks; but didn't read the books. As far as Harry Potter is concerned; I wouldn't wipe my you-know-what with them.

TinStar,
When they first came out I felt the same way. We are only just now reading them, primarily because World Magazine did a good review of them last year. The Magazine pointed out that far from being an "occult" book full of witches, wizards, werewolfs and the like, it is actually an epic story of good vr evil in much the same genre as The Lord of the Rings.
Based on their review, I read the first one and found myself in agreement. I passed them on to my 14-year daughter, in the hope that it may encourage her to become a reader. She's tore through them as quickly as I can find them for her. So, at least, that plan was a success. Hopefully, we can continue to interrest her in reading.

Written by a woman who believes that garbage. Making her a what?
The greatest Book on good vs. evil is the Bible. True good against real evil.
IMHO Lord of the Rings is very different. Set in a land that is based on fantasy with some very distinct parallels to the Bible. Just MHO. Look at how the youth responded to Potter. It was the rage and likely still is. I think it gets their mind thinking in the wrong direction.

Actually, I believe that Ms. Rowling is a Christian. I don't think it's exactly accurate to say "she believes" that garbage, meaning she believes in the witches and magic and stuff.
At any rate, the issue of Harry Potter is one that can be debated either way. If you (or anyone else, for that matter) are interested, below is a link to Amazon.com, where there is a review of a book called What's a Christian to do with Harry Potter? It's a good review, and it cites an entire chapter of the book as part of the review. It's certainly food for thought.
The review draws some interesting parallels to Sheldon's book In His Steps.
At any rate, read the review of the book here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/product-description/1578564719/ref=dp_proddesc_0?ie=UTF8&n=283155&s=books).

Waidmann,
Would you be surprised if I read that review? Aren't there enough Bible Verses for me to read?

Rich,
Would you be surprised if I read that review?
Not really. I think two kinds of people will read the review--those who have a somewhat open mind on the issue and are willing to see what Ms. Neal has to say and those whose mind is already made up and either want to discover what Ms. Neal's errors are or are looking for validation for their position.
Likewise, I think there are two kinds of people who won't read the review as well--those whose minds are already made up and don't want to be confused/challenged/seduced by contradicting opinions and those who simply don't care enough about Harry Potter to spend the time reading a review of a book by a Christian author about it. It's just not an issue to this group. This is the group I would have been in two months ago.
I don't have enough information at present regarding your beliefs about the Harry Potter series to know where you would fall. I posted the link for the convenience of the people in one of the first two groups.
Have you read (do you intend to read) the review? Or the Harry Potter series, for that matter? What did you think?
Aren't there enough Bible Verses for me to read?
I'm sure there is the perfect amount of Bible Verses for you to read. :)
