I dropped by a local gun shop to pick up cleaning brushes in 44 caliber and I had to wait while the counter guy explained to a newbee potential customer , that he didn,t want a 44 mag for home defense......reason,(youll love this)
"it had not nearly the stopping power of a 357 mag! he explained that in the old days gunfighters like bill hickock use 36 caliber pistols because they were good man stoppers, but when the army increased the bore size to 38 caliber in the Spanish American war and dropped the powder charge the pistols failed to stop crazed morro tribesmen so the army increased the bore to 45 caliber, to compensate, for the lack of powder, that worked, but not really well so in the 1950s the army and cops got together with smith and wesson and demanded the caliber be reduced and the powder charge be increased to duplicate the original loads bill hickock used to produce the 357 magnum, once the velocity was increased back to the original levels in the 357 mag and the caliber dropped back to the original 36 caliber they had a real man stopper again. the 44 mag can,t equal the 357 mag because the velocity's to low and the calibers too large to allow sufficient penetration.
the military finally realized their mistake and went to the 9mm Beretta, because the 9mm is a 36 caliber with more shots and the round nose hard ball fmc bullets don,t expand so they get the necessary penetration that allows them to stop determined attackers ."

he then turns to me and asked what I wanted, I said a couple 44 cal brass brushes.........I need to clean my little 44 mag, because if the barrels not clean accuracy falls off, he grins and says "your probably using cast bullets, they lead the barrel unless every 6th shot is a jacketed bullet, then tells the guy that if you don,t shoot jacketed bullets in a 357 mag the lead builds up to the point the bullets can,t get thru the barrel."

after that I just smiled and walked out.......theres no sense in even discussing things with MORRONS

Let me tell you something, folks: You can't fix stupid. There's not a pill you can take; there's not a class you can go to. Stupid is forever.

It is very unfortunate that some retail stores hire people off the street and enable them to give out such bad information. A couple years ago at Sports Authority, I observed a father buying a rifle for his daughter to hunt deer. The little girl was very small and the clerk recommended a 7mm magnum. The father was about to make the purchase when I told him many adults can not shoot that rifle accurately. I suggested he find a rifle with less recoil.

At that point I was asked to leave the store. I left and haven't been back since.

Rimrock, are you sure, you were not in the Wally - Mart Store??? Now that is the kind of story or information those people would give out, as they have mostly none-experienced people working their counters.

I would think that a gunstore, would surely have folks working for them that are smarter than the average 5th grader!!! Well, maybe more like 3rd grader hey. :D

Lots of these out there, their story is always how their (enter your choice of caliber) will just pick up (enter your choice of big game animal) and throw it back (enter your number of feet) when shot. The other is that a 45APC will ALWAYS knock down a bad guy even if you hit them in the arm.

I was buying a .375 H&H and some clown went on about the "brutal" recoil till I was almost afraid to buy it. I used to shoot a .458 but the too light gun with a to skinny buttplate hurt like Hell.

When I got to the range with 300 grain FMJ loads I was waiting for another mule kick. I found it to be a robust recoil but NOT difficult at all. Each gun and shooter is a law unto themself.

I have noticed that the 44 Mag is a man stopper. Every time I shoot one of the damn things, it stops me from wanting to shoot it any more. I am starting to develop an aversion to the 357 mag too. I like my little 38 S&W (which is what your moron was talking about not have stopping power).

Rimrock, I used to do like you did and just smile and walk away but these days with guns and shooting under attack from all sides I don't let it go any more. When a gun store clerk starts spouting stupid stuff I correct the problem if I know the answer. There's too much at stake to let misinformation rule the day.

Smokey, If I had heard the conversation you heard I would have done the same thing you did and Sports Authority would be calling me on the phone asking me to come back into their store and do some shopping on them because I would talk. I would talk to the Papers to the TV to the Radio I would lose no opportunity to tell anyone and everyone just how stupid and careless they were with their information. There was one of their stores in New Orleans several years back (they've since gone out of business there I think) and they had some good people working there. They had a real LooLoo too! He told me that he had seen two buck fighting and that sparks were coming off of their antlers. That was before I said "Bullshit" as a natural response.

#1 son used to guide and he told me there were three things that all his hunters saw on their hunting trips. They all saw a mountain lion, they all saw two bucks fighting, and they all saw the animal lifted off the ground by the power of the rifle (at 400 yards of course) even though they could not tell him which direction the animal ran afterwards.

In the greater majority of all of the accounts that I have read concerning someone being shot in a home defense situation it nearly always involves the perp running away. Often people that have been shot don't even know they've been shot right away. Pistols are just like that. That's why for home defense I use a 12 ga shotgun loaded with 7 1/2 shot. Never had to use it, hope I never do, but I'll garontee they are going to know they've been shot!
