Had a good training day with my 1yr YLM--he's been introed to dekes on land and water but first time for dog ladder/platform in water so i got as wet as he did. Got to place i use to train about 10am .after fishing for 3 hrs. man for a Mon. place was loaded with a boat anchored 75 yrds fro where i go and folks(10 or so) across back water fishing- well i got set up so pup would have to swim to ladder- tthrew a few bumpers for simple retrieves and then brough out my NEF .22 pistol launcher- the noise woke up the slough- one dog on other side started going for bumper- what a diversion- pup did his thing ok in spite of it- but wanted to head to land rather than use ladder- i got him on it and then second timei had to again guide him but after that he was ok- ditto taking off from it etc. all in all a good day-folks across river waved when I left- maybe good riddance but they had smiles on faces so no damage done.

It sounds like a good day to me & your pup sounds like it's on it's way.
Have you been to Cresco for pheasants? I heard it was real poor but then the corn was not picked.
I can't make it this year but plan to do South Dakota next year. I'll go on a guided hunt for a few days and then free-lance the rest of the time. That's the plan, anyway.
I always appreciated you giving me a call when you were in Oly.

Big John,
Since my original post we spent 2 1/2 mos in MT--hunted every day but 3--upland birds were down BUT we never got skunked- waterfowl was good early but then an early storm took all local birds and northern ones are just arriving now. We've been home for a week now and I hunted the Miss R. for dux 4 days with VERY limited success. Ben hunting pheasant at game preserve and pup is doing very well- there is no replacement for experience.
