Most built for defensive uses seem to have a full length guide rod. The Kimber SIS has a "military length" rod whatever that is. Functionally what difference is there? Kimber says the shorter rod enables easier field cleaning.

I wouldn't say "most built for defensive uses have a full length guide rod" as most top line custom guns actually do not. I dislike the full length rod, it is a pain in the rear to take the gun down. A "GI" plug and spring is just fine and has worked for a very long time and is easier to tear the gun down in a tool less crisis situation - whatever that might be.

I've owned a 1911 of one brand and size or another since around 1966. I consider a full-length guide rods and an external extractors solutions in search of a problem.

I only asked because a legion of "experts" both in print and at ranges have stated in no uncertain terms that a combat 1911 should have a full length guide rod but I didn't see why. MAYBE for a comp gun but even then I am unsure.

Bwana,

Yes, some pistols do have full length guide rods, but John Browning decided the "GI" rod was fine for his 1911. It has worked for 98 years so far.

You'll find just as many if not more "experts" that hate the full length rods.
