3D Archery Poolesville, MD Izaak Walton

Here's the spring/summer shoot 3D Archery Shoot Schedule.
Just like last year we'll be smoking up venison quarters most every shoot.
Maybe even a wild boar leg!

For more info and directions check us out on the web at www.bcciwla.org/

Our first shoot was yesterday, and it went great!
The archery range has never looked better.
We have more help this year at the range, and because of this we have a new roof on the pavilion, each of the target butts, and the grounds are manicured and the 3D trails are all neat and cut.
Everybody has been working hard.
We had almost 40 shooters yesterday, which includes a girl-scout group that came out at 2pm for their first shooting lesson.
They had a ball.
One of them spied the 3D foam hog target at the 20-yard target and pestered me until I caved in and brought it over in front of the targets.
They had that hog looking like a pin cushion after most every round.
It's very gratifying introducing kids to archery and I'm considering maybe chairing a youth archery program at Izaak Walton, but only if we have enough help otherwise at the range.

Thanks to the Maryland Bowhunter's Society Central Chapter for loaning us bows and arrows so we can run these youth events!

Twanger,

I've heard from a couple point sources that the new movie "The Hunger Games" has sparked a huge interest in archery--particularly traditional archery. Not sure if you're seeing any of that, but we've got a couple new female shooters in our spring league. If you've got the time and interest, you might want to talk with your committee about whether you might do some sort of advertised "Hunger Games" 3-D shoot, or something.

Strike while the iron is hot.

This Girl Scout visit was sparked by The Hunger Games.
We have been inundated with requests for youth archery classes, particularly for girls.
In the Movie Catness (the protagonist) is a great role model for young girls - strong yet caring.
And for once, hunting is not demonized in a movie.

The girls were trying to shoot the 3D foam hog in the eye because that's how Catness shot small game!

Every one of them was smiling ear-to-ear during the shoot.
There is no greater reward!

Twanger,

That sounds sooooo cool. I hope we can do something like that at the DSC. Now you just have to get them to join the club. Will there be a second lesson for the Girl Scouts?

Their leader was asking about coming back, and I certainly encouraged it.
Some of the grla were shooting very well by the end of the lesson.

Were they shooting compound, Genesis or traditional bows?

Genesis
I turned them all the way down, since these girls were about ten years old.
They had no trouble pulling them back.
If you don't know about these bows, they have a constant draw weight throughout most of their range, no let-off, and no back wall.
Anybody from 10 to 80 years old can shoot them.
We replaced the awkward wire flipper rests with easy-to-use whisker biscuits.
